Tazziberry™ plants are quite tolerant of less than perfect sites. These shrubs can perform well even with as little as half a day of sun. The fruit will be more mauve in colour rather than red in conditions of low light but flavour remains superb and fruit size is not affected.
In our experience a pH of 5.5 – 6.0 seems to suit the plant well.
As with any crop weeds are a nuisance for the first couple of years after planting, so mulching and spraying to prevent competition will be time well spent.
The following explains how we went about planting and establishing our own crop.
1. Rows were marked at 3 metre intervals to allow our ride-on mower good access, and the plants within the rows were planted 2 metres apart.
2. We placed a five foot stake (leaving four feet above the soil level) for tying up the lateral growth of the plant at a later date.
3. An area 60 cm in diameter was sprayed with herbicide where each plant was to be planted. This was left for about two weeks.
4. We then dug a hole 40 cm in diameter and 40 cm deep, then into that hole added a mixture consisting of 1 spade full of dry wood shavings : 1 spade full of compost and 25g of Dynamic Lifter. This was left for a further week before planting.
5. When ready to plant make a hole big enough to sit the plant about 2cm lower than the surrounding earth. Back fill and firm lightly.
6. Loosely tie Tazziberry™ plants to the stake to prevent over bending and subsequent bark cracking at the base of the plant which could lead to fungal disease.
7. Water in well and from planting onwards do not allow plant to totally dry out.
8. There is no need to remove flowers in the first or second season as you might for some other fruits as it will not appreciably affect the growth of the plant.
